Tips and first aid for braces wearers
Don’t worry, we are here for you if a problem arises with your braces.
Here we have compiled the most common questions and problems related to braces for you. We also give you tips on how to behave ideally.
Problems with fixed braces
In the first few days after the fixed braces have been fitted, there may be tension and sensitivity of the teeth and gums. This is a normal reaction and may last 2-3 days.
To protect the gums, the protective wax that we have given you can be applied to the bracket to protect the sensitive area.
Serious complaints
You should make an SOS appointment for these complaints!
- The end of the archwire sticks out and pokes into the cheek or gums.
- A bracket has come loose.
- The pain / sensitivity lasts longer than 3 days.
- I am not sure if everything is OK.
Nutrition
What should I consider in terms of nutrition with fixed braces?
Hard foods such as carrots, apples, nuts as well as sticky foods can cause individual brackets to come off. Therefore, these should be cut into small pieces to avoid bending the arches or losing brackets.
Dental care
What do I have to keep in mind when caring for my teeth with fixed braces?
Thorough cleaning of the teeth after every meal is particularly important with fixed braces. Please use the interdental brushes or single tuft brushes (available in the drugstore) to clean the intermediate areas around the brackets.
If proper tooth cleaning with a toothbrush is not possible, at least the mouth can be rinsed with a rinsing solution.
A travel toothbrush for in-between is a good tool for when you are on the go.
If oral hygiene is inadequate, there is a risk of decalcification or even tooth decay. So even with fixed braces, please be sure to clean your teeth regularly and thoroughly!
Gum inflammation
Where does gingivitis come from and what do I do about it?
If the gums are somewhat thickened or bleed easily, this is usually due to poor oral hygiene.
Especially if the gums are inflamed, this area should be cleaned well, only then can the inflammation recede. Please ask us about areas that are difficult to clean. Together we will find the right tool for you.
Problems with removable braces
The braces no longer fit
You should make an SOS appointment for these complaints!
- The removable braces press against the gums.
- The removable braces no longer hold properly and fall out.
The brace has disappeared
The brace is untraceable or has been lost
Please report to the practice as soon as possible and make an appointment. If the braces are not worn for a long time, the teeth or jaws can move back again and valuable time is lost.
